Hartmut Neven

Hartmut Neven is a scientist and Vice President of Engineering at Google, where he leads the Quantum Artificial Intelligence Lab. He is recognised for his work in quantum computing, computer vision, and machine learning. In 2012, he founded the Quantum AI Lab to develop large-scale, error-corrected quantum computers capable of tackling complex problems beyond the reach of classical systems. Neven holds a PhD in physics from Ruhr University Bochum, where he focused on vision-guided autonomous mobile robots. His research spans quantum computing, machine learning, and neuroscience. He has played a key role in advancing quantum machine learning and has contributed to major milestones, including demonstrations of quantum supremacy—where a quantum computer performs tasks beyond the reach of classical machines—and the development of the 105-qubit Willow quantum processor in 2024.
