Orit Halpern

Orit Halpern is the Lighthouse Professor and Chair of Digital Cultures at Technische Universität Dresden. She is a historian of science and technology who works on AI, cybernetics,and design. Her most recent book with Robert Mitchell is titled The Smartness Mandate (MIT Press, 2023). She is currently working on two projects: a history of automating decision-making in science, economics and business, and a history of experimentation at planetary scales in design, science and engineering. She also directs Against Catastrophe, a platform for imagining alternative futures with technology that are more equitable, diverse and just then those we have now.
