Dr Nike Sommerwerk

Dr Nike Sommerwerk is a researcher at the Museum für Naturkunde - Leibniz Institute for Evolution and Biodiversity Science (MfN) where she leads the Research Cluster NaturBerlin. Together with her interdisciplinary team, she researches the multidimensional change of Berlin's urban biodiversity. She is also an expert for biodiversity and water at Fresh Thoughts, a policy consultancy. Prior, she was the scientific coordinator of the project Development of International Water Quality Guidelines for Ecosystems – IWQGES located at the United Nations University - Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) in Bonn, Germany. The developed guideline was adopted by the UN Environment Assembly and published in 2018. In the past, she has also worked on topics such as the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive, River Basin Management of the Danube, Patterns and determinants of European freshwater biodiversity, Hydromorphological river restoration measures, Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS), Effectiveness of science-policy-economy-society interfaces, Stakeholder & volunteer engagement, and Strategic network development. She gained her PhD at the Freie Universität Berlin (FU) and at the Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB).
