DeForrest Brown Jr is an Alabama-raised, Ex-American rhythmanalyst, writer, musician, and curator whose work explores the links between the Black experience and industrialised labor systems, as well as Black innovation in electronic music. His first book, Assembling a Black Counter Culture, was released in 2022. His second book, this simulation sux, followed in 2024. Brown’s work has been presented at institutions including the Venice Biennale Musica 2025, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, Somerset House, London and Performa, New York. He has taught and lectured at Simon Fraser University, NYU, The New School, Harvard, Brown, and Princeton. Brown releases music under the alias Speaker Music.
